We are Family: Building a Support System That Uplifts Us All
In a world where loneliness has reached epidemic levels, connection has never been more crucial. Paradoxically, as society becomes more digitally “connected,” real, meaningful in-person connections are fading. And in a time when divisiveness seems to be at an all-time high, it’s easy to feel disconnected and isolated. But here’s the truth: humans are wired to live in community. We’re meant to lift each other up, to build one another’s confidence, and to create networks of support that can carry us through life’s highs and lows.
If you’re ready to build a support system that energizes and empowers you—and to make a real difference in the lives of those around you—here’s how we can start:
Start Small, Think Big: Building Local Connections
Sometimes the most powerful impact begins close to home. Feeling overwhelmed by all the world’s problems? Start with small steps that create connection in your neighborhood. Supporting local organizations, lending a hand to a neighbor, showing up at community events—these actions may feel small, but they ripple outward, creating bonds that transform strangers into allies and allies into friends.
For me, volunteering with an LGBTQIA youth group has been a powerful way to create these connections. Growing up, safe spaces like this didn’t exist, and as a parent of an LGBTQIA youth and a teacher, I see how much these spaces are needed. This group has given me friendships, introduced me to inspiring local leaders, and even led me to join a queer bowling league—a place where I feel the joy of being unapologetically myself, surrounded by people who truly get me. Finding my own community within a community has been invaluable, and I encourage you to look for ways to do the same.
Lead with Compassion and Common Ground
In divisive times, it’s so easy to focus on differences. But what if we chose, instead, to look for what unites us? When we’re willing to find common ground—whether through shared values, goals, or simply similar interests—we build bridges that rise above the noise. This is what strengthens communities: being open to understanding, willing to listen, and courageous enough to create unity.
Design a Support System That Works for You
Your support network doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. Friends, family, neighbors, colleagues, mentors—even those far away who are just a message away—can be part of a support system that’s tailor-made for you. It’s this wide range of connections that lets us lean on different people for different needs: some for career advice, others for a laugh, and others simply for a shoulder to lean on.
Create a Cycle of Support
The best support networks are built on reciprocity. When we show up for others, we create a cycle of giving and receiving that strengthens trust and deepens connection. And that’s the beauty of mutual support—it’s not just about leaning on others; it’s about being someone others can lean on, too.
Bringing It All Together: Uniting for a Greater Cause
As the election season approaches, it can feel as if differences are all around us. But there’s strength in finding common purpose. Real change starts right in our communities, where our actions can make a difference that goes far beyond what we might imagine. By embracing our roles as friends, neighbors, and allies, we create a world where everyone feels supported, valued, and uplifted.
Building a support system that’s rooted in compassion, local action, and mutual respect is a powerful way to create connection and foster resilience—not just for ourselves but for our communities. And that’s when we truly find strength in numbers. Let’s embrace the people around us and make our world a little brighter, one connection at a time.
